IMPROV CLASS POLICIES & FAQs

Wondering about attendance policies? Curious about course registration and payments? We’ve got the scoop!

CLASS ENROLLMENT

Although exceptions could be made depending on your improv experience, all students are highly encouraged to begin at Level 1 regardless of their past improv courses completed in the past.

  • The Home Theater reserves the right to accept or deny an individual’s application.
  • Participation in or completion of classes does not guarantee placement on a performance team.
  • The Home Theater reserves the right to postpone or cancel a class if they do not reach a minimum number of students.
  • Our instructors are working actors/improvisers. While we don’t anticipate having to change the instructor after registration ends, please be aware that this may happen from time to time.

REGISTRATION / PAYMENTS

Due to our limited class sizes, course placement isn’t guaranteed until payment has been received prior to the first day of class.

  • We offer a *payment plan if you can’t pay the entire tuition upfront. You can put a deposit of at least half the full price of a class to secure your spot. Full balances are due by 5 pm, Friday, the third week of course. Any payments received after that time will incur a $25 late payment fee.
(Payment plans are only for the Improv and Writing classes, not electives and workshops)
  • Tuition for classes is half off once you have completed the level, as long as you’re repeating that level(s) within a year of originally having successfully completed that level.

If you cannot attend the class you registered for, we can roll your tuition to be used for a future term, transfer you to a class that has an available spot, or give you a refund, as long as you contact the Training Center 24 hours before the first day of the class you registered for. If you reach out after that, we cannot roll your tuition, transfer you to another class, or give you a refund.

ATTENDANCE

  • In order to encourage our philosophy of commitment to a group and an ensemble. students are allowed to miss no more than two classes in each 8 week session. (You may make up a class, but make-ups will still count as an absence.) If a student misses more than 2 classes throughout the course they are required to repeat the level before advancing to the next level.
  • Students must contact the Training Center to notify us of an upcoming absence and request a make up class. (You are not allowed to try to make up a class unless it has been cleared with the Training Center.) Students repeating a level due to 3 or more absences do not qualify for the 1/2 price tuition. The 1/2 price “repeat” tuition is reserved for students who are repeating a level they have successfully completed.
  • The Home Theater reserves the right to hold a student back or move them forward according to ability and need.

STUDENT ID'S

Your training center student ID grants you admission to almost every show at the theater for free, however, in the event that there are not enough seats for ticketed customers, you may be asked to give up your seat.

PERFORMANCE

While no one is guaranteed a performance opportunity, our students will get opportunities throughout the year to perform on our stage via student and theater-run shows.
Following the completion of their last level, students have the chance to be chosen to become part of a Home ensemble.

REGISTRATION FAQS

THE CLASS I WANT SAYS WAIT-LIST ONLY, SHOULD I SIGN UP FOR ANOTHER CLASS?

We give priority to students on the wait-list that are not enrolled in another class. So, it’s up to you. If you can make another class, and it’s open, you might as well sign up for it. Having said that, please don’t enroll in a class whose date and time you cannot make.

I CAN NO LONGER ATTEND THE CLASS I SIGNED UP FOR, WHAT CAN I DO?

As long as you contact the Training Center before your class starts, you can roll your tuition to a later date, transfer to another class that has spots available, or receive a refund. Once the class begins, we cannot roll tuition, transfer to another class, or provide a refund.

I CAN’T PAY THE FULL AMOUNT AT REGISTRATION, WHAT THE HECK DO I DO?

If you can’t pay the full tuition for our Improv classes or Writing classes, you can secure your spot with a deposit of at least half of the full cost of a class.  This is an option you can choose when registering online. You will then need to enroll in an auto pay where the balance is charged to the card used on the Friday of the third week of classes.

WILL I HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING THE CLASS I WANT IF I CALL OR COME IN?

Actually, if you call or come in your chances will be slightly worse. If you come in or call in, the Training Center Staff be using the web portal to register you. All class registration is handled via the web portal on a first-come first-serve basis regardless of registration method. So it may be best to register yourself online.

CAN I REGISTER OTHER PEOPLE?

Sorta. You can pay for another person’s class with your credit card, however, it must be a separate order from yours. If doing it online, make one transaction for yourself and log out, then either create an account for that person or use their login information to purchase a class in their name.

HOW LONG DO CLASSES LAST?

Our classes run in eight-week sessions. Classes meet once a week for 3 hours. (Session length might be modified depending on Holidays)

IF I HAVE PROPER IMPROV EXPERIENCE, CAN I SKIP A LEVEL?

If your improv experience consists of having taken more than one level of improv classes from an improv theater (iO, UCB, etc.), exceptions could be made where you will be allowed to register for any level you think you will be comfortable in, given your prior experience.

Having said that…
We have a unique approach to improvisation and a progressive training center where each level is built upon the previous one.

In addition, although there could be exceptions made for one to start their curriculum at higher levels, our philosophy is that nothing builds ensemble like going through the trenches together, so we highly encourage all new students to start at level 1.

(Please call our training center to discuss exceptions before registering for a class)

I ALREADY KNOW I'LL BE MISSING AT LEAST TWO CLASSES, SHOULD I STILL REGISTER FOR A CLASS?

NO. If you already know you will be missing at least two classes of the class you want to take, things are still bound to come up that might cause you to miss a third class, which will then prevent you from moving on to the next level.

WHERE DO I START?

We will be making announcements soon on when class registration will begin. Stay tuned!
